Keeping kids entertained but in a healthy way!

I know that there are times that giving your child a tablet or allowing them to watch TV is an easier choice sometimes! But if you want to try to avoid so much screen time here are a few “Old School” ideas that I used to do with my kiddos when they were young! These worked really well and it didn’t cost a thing! Plus it allowed them to be creative and responsible! Especially the first option! Check it out and let me know what you think!

Give them chores. This isn’t a popular option, but can be good for them. If you’re going to clean the kitchen, have your children clean their room. It will allow your kids to see that they have a role in keeping the house clean as well!

Give them new tools to explore! Handing a child a new tool can keep them occupied for a pretty long time! Give your child a magnifying glass or a flashlight and let them figure out how it works for them.

Grow a garden! Give your child a small plant for them to be responsible for. Maybe they can help in the garden you already have by helping with watering and asking them to check on it.

Verbal Games! Take turns naming animals that begin with each letter in ABC or play 20 Questions. You can continue to cook, clean or make dinner while you play these types of games with your kids.

Build a fort! This is an all time favorite! Give your child some pillows and a blanket and challenge them to turn the couch into a fort! This will be something they can do and be more likely to play independently inside the fort they just created! Giving you some time that you need to get things done around the house!

Nuts and bolts! Yes! Give your children some nuts and bolts for them to explore trying to put them together and taking apart! Also, you can give them several locks and keys! Put them all in a bag and see if they can figure out which key goes together!

Keeping the young kiddos occupied is tough! But trying new activities for kids will get them used to playing independently and being creative! Think about what activities you used to do when you were younger and introduce them to your kids. You might be surprised at what they will love!
